DR Congo

The situation in the DRC is dramatic with displaced populations, fleeing slaughter, rape and attack from guerrilla factions. Many poor families receive shelter from other, larger families, causing long-term difficulties for these “host” families.

In the city of Bukavu, in Eastern DRC, the number of children currently inhabiting the streets and other public areas within the city amounts to several thousand. The number of children and young people in street situations is too immense to be able to arrange long term shelter for all of them. Our partner, PEDER, has observed that these children have lost confidence, both in themselves and in society, and that drug abuse is the status quo.
