What we do

WhatwedoStreet Child Africa supports 10 African organisations who work directly with children living in street situations in Africa. We are currently working in 7 countries.

We have information about all of the countries in which we work and our local partners. We also have compelling stories of street children that we have helped through our work over the past few years.

The Challenge

  • Africa is "the continent of children". 50% of all Africans are under 16 years old (UN figures).
  • Africa is rapidly urbanising. 42% of Africans now live in cities. Numbers are growing (UN).
  • 34 of the 42 heavily-indebted poor countries (HIPC) are African. Non-HIPC African countries (e.g. Nigeria) are also desperately poor.
  • In Accra, Ghana, alone, there are 26,000 street children, including 6,000 street babies. Where will they go?
  • Street babies are now into the third generation - all contact with family/village/culture has gone.
  • Street culture is new. Who understands it? It is the reality for street children and for us.
